Guildford's High Street is cobbled and steep, and that combination has cost more alloy wheels than any other hundred yards in this district. Add the multi-storeys behind the Friary Centre and the loading bays around Tunsgate Quarter, and you have a town centre that is hard on tyres and rims.
North of the centre the character changes to trading estates and retail parks, where the work is mostly vans and the surfaces are, mercifully, flat.
The A3 at Ladymead and the roads through the town
The A3 passes the town in a cutting and rejoins ordinary life at Ladymead, where the retail park, the A25 and the town traffic all meet. It is the busiest point in the district and one of the more difficult to stop safely on.
Slyfield Industrial Estate sits just beyond it, and that is where most of our commercial work in GU1 happens — proper hard standing, room to work, and vans that cannot afford to sit still. Back in the centre, the problem is the opposite: narrow one-way streets, delivery restrictions and a gradient that makes chocking the wheels a necessity rather than a nicety.

Guildford Spectrum and G Live both have large car parks that are easy for us to work in, and both are useful meeting points if your street is impossible.

- I have kerbed a wheel on the cobbles in the High Street.
- Common here. We will check whether the tyre has taken a pinch cut on the inner sidewall, which often follows a hard kerb strike and is not repairable. We also check the rim for a bend, because a bent rim will leak air with a brand new tyre fitted.
- Can you fit tyres at Slyfield Industrial Estate?
- Yes, and it is one of the easier places in Guildford for us to work. There is hard standing and room to get a wheel off a van without blocking a yard. We can arrange it directly with the unit or the operator if you are not the driver.
- Do you work in the multi-storey car parks in town?
- We do, subject to headroom. Give us the car park name and the level and we will bring a vehicle that fits. Where the barrier is too low for anything useful, we will meet you at street level instead and work there.
