Mobile tyres and recovery in GU26 (Hindhead)
The A3 disappears underground for just over a mile at Hindhead, and that tunnel is the single most important fact about driving in this district. There is no stopping in it, no hard shoulder worth the name at either portal, and a tyre that fails inside it becomes an incident rather than a nuisance.
Above it sits the Devil's Punch Bowl, Beacon Hill and Grayshott — high, cold ground where a tyre loses pressure faster in winter than most drivers expect.
The Hindhead Tunnel and the A287
If a tyre goes down as you approach the tunnel, do not enter it. Come off before the portal and stop somewhere with space. If you are already inside, keep going and stop beyond the exit — the tunnel is monitored and stopping in it will close a bore.
The A287 crosses the top of the district and is the old route over the hill: steep, wooded and slower than the map suggests. Grayshott's village streets are narrow and busy at school times, and much of the residential parking is on a slope, which decides where a jack can safely go.

- What should I do if a tyre fails in the Hindhead Tunnel?
- Keep going if the vehicle is controllable and stop beyond the exit. The tunnel has no hard shoulder and stopping inside it closes a bore and puts you in real danger. Once you are clear and safely parked, call us with your direction of travel.
- How far is Hindhead from your base?
- It is a genuine run from Cobham, mostly down the A3, and we do not pretend otherwise. We will give you an honest timescale on the phone. If you need someone standing next to the car within a few minutes, we are not that.
- Do tyres really lose pressure faster up here?
- Cold air contracts, so pressures read lower on a cold morning at this height than they do in the valley. It is usually normal rather than a leak, but a tyre that is repeatedly low is telling you something. We can check it properly at your door.
