Mobile tyres and recovery in GU28 (Petworth)
Three A-roads meet in the middle of Petworth and the town centre was built for none of them. The streets around the Market Square are narrow, walled and full of tight corners, and a delivery lorry stopping in the wrong place brings the whole town to a halt.
Get out of the town and the district becomes park wall, woodland and lanes running south towards the downs.
The A272, the A283 and Duncton Hill
The A272 comes in from the west and the A283 runs north to south, and both squeeze through the town. There is very little space to stop safely inside Petworth itself, so a tyre going down there is better nursed out to a wider stretch or a car park.
South of the town the A285 climbs Duncton Hill, which is steep, wooded and hard on brakes. Coming down it with a soft tyre is a bad idea; the heat that builds in an underinflated tyre on a long descent destroys the casing. Northchapel, Lurgashall and Lodsworth sit on lanes off the main roads, unlit and easy to miss.

- Can you work in Petworth town centre?
- It depends where. The streets around the Market Square are too narrow for a van to stand without blocking traffic. If your car is there, we will usually arrange to meet at a car park or a wider road nearby rather than gridlock the town.
- I have a soft tyre and Duncton Hill ahead of me.
- Do not attempt the descent. An underinflated tyre builds heat quickly under braking on a long hill and can fail without warning. Stop somewhere safe at the top, call us, and let us deal with it before the tyre is beyond a repair.
- How far out is this district for you?
- Petworth is a long run from our Cobham base, down the A3 and across. We do cover it and we do come out, but you should expect a wait proportionate to the distance and we will tell you what that looks like when you ring.
