Mobile tyre fitting and recovery in GU29 (Midhurst)

The A272 through Midhurst and Cocking Hill
The A272 runs east to west through the town and is the road most people arrive on. Through Midhurst it narrows and slows; either side of the town it opens out and speeds up, and the verges are shallow with ditches behind them.
The A286 runs south from Midhurst and climbs Cocking Hill onto the downs. It is a long, steady gradient with a sharp section near the top, and it is the kind of road where a tyre that was merely soft at the bottom is dangerous at the summit. Stedham, Iping and Elsted sit on lanes west of the town, single track with passing places.

Questions we get asked about GU29
- My car is stuck on grass parking at Cowdray Park.
- Tell us that when you ring. We carry boards to spread the load under a jack, which is what soft ground demands. If the car has also settled into ruts, we may need to get it onto firm ground first before any tyre work starts.
- Is Cocking Hill a problem with a soft tyre?
- It is. A long climb followed by a long descent puts heat into an underinflated tyre from both directions, and heat is what destroys the casing. Stop at the bottom rather than pressing on, and we will deal with it while it is still repairable.
- Do you cover the villages west of Midhurst?
- Yes — Stedham, Iping and Elsted are all on our list. They are single-track lanes with passing places, so stopping at a passing place rather than mid-lane makes a real difference to whether we can get a van alongside you.
