Petersfield is where the A3 stops feeling like a Surrey road. By the time it gets here it is running along the foot of the downs, the junctions are further apart, and the town sits just off it with a square, a pond and a street pattern that predates all of it.
This is a long way from Cobham and we say so plainly. We work the district, but nobody should book us here expecting a van that was already round the corner.
The A3 around Petersfield and the A272
The A3 bypasses the town to the east and is dual carriageway throughout, with grade-separated junctions. That layout is a genuine advantage when something goes wrong: there is almost always an exit within a mile, and taking it beats stopping on the verge.
The A272 crosses west towards the Meon valley through Langrish, and the lanes to East Meon, West Meon and Froxfield climb into the downs on chalk. Chalk lanes get slick rather than muddy, and a car parked on a wet chalk verge can slide slowly while it is jacked, which is why we prefer tarmac even if it means moving.

Questions we get asked about GU32
- Should I stop on the A3 or carry on to a junction?
- Carry on to a junction if the vehicle is controllable. The A3 here has exits at reasonable intervals and a slip road is a far better place to work than a verge. If the tyre has already come apart, stop, get everyone out on the nearside and call.
- Can you work on a chalk verge in the Meon valley?
- We would rather not. Wet chalk is slippery and a jacked car can move on it. Where the lane allows, we will ask you to move onto a firm level surface first, even if that means rolling forward twenty yards on a flat tyre.
- How long will you take to get to Petersfield?
- It is one of the longer runs from our base and it depends entirely on the A3. We will give you a realistic figure when you call and update you if it changes. We do not quote arrival times we cannot stand behind.
