Mobile tyres and recovery in GU34 (Alton)
Gliders are the surprise in GU34. Lasham Airfield sits out in the fields north-west of Alton and brings a steady flow of trailers, tow vehicles and club traffic onto lanes that were never built for any of it.
Alton itself is the market town at the centre of the district, with the Watercress Line running out of it and the A31 sweeping past the edge. Between the two extremes there are a dozen villages on lanes, and this is the largest district on our list by place count for a reason.
The A31 past Alton and the A32
The A31 runs along the northern edge as a fast dual carriageway with proper junctions. It is the quickest way in and out of the district and the least suitable place to stop, so if a tyre is going down, take the next exit rather than the next layby.
The A32 heads south from Alton towards East Tisted, and the B3006 goes out to Selborne. Off those, the lanes to Bentworth, Lasham, Shalden and Froyle are narrow with high hedges and tractor traffic. A trailer on the verge and a car on the lane leaves nothing for a van, so where you stop determines whether we can work at all.

This district is a wide one. We come out to Alton, Beech, Bentworth, Binsted, Chawton, East Tisted, Farringdon, Four Marks, Froyle, Holybourne, Jane Austen's House, Lasham, Lasham Airfield, Medstead, Selborne, Shalden and Watercress Line.
Jane Austen's House and the Watercress Line both draw visitor traffic into narrow village streets, and both are easy landmarks to guide us in by.
Questions we get asked about GU34
- Can you fit tyres on a trailer or a tow vehicle?
- Tow vehicles yes, and trailer tyres depending on the size and type. Ring us with the markings from the sidewall before you assume either way. Trailer tyres are speed and load rated differently from car tyres and fitting the wrong one is not safe.
- How do you find the villages off the A32?
- By pin, wherever possible. Bentworth, Shalden and Froyle all have lanes with repeated names and few signs, and the hedges are high enough to hide what signs there are. A location sent from your phone removes the guesswork completely.
- Is Alton at the edge of where you work?
- It is towards the outer edge from our Cobham base, yes. We cover the district properly, but the run is a long one and we will quote you a realistic time on the phone. We would rather tell you that than have you waiting and wondering.
