Mobile tyres and recovery in GU4 (Burpham to the Clandons)
Newlands Corner sits at the top of a long climb on the A25, and a car that has laboured up it with a soft tyre often arrives at the car park with the tyre destroyed. Heat and low pressure do far more damage than the original nail ever did.
The rest of GU4 is quieter: the suburban edge at Burpham and Jacobs Well, the estate villages at East and West Clandon, and the Tillingbourne villages along the bottom.
The A25 up to Newlands Corner and the A281
The A25 climbs east out of Guildford towards Newlands Corner and drops again the other side. It is a road with steep gradients, tight bends and a viewpoint car park that fills at weekends, and it is where most of our GU4 roadside work happens.
The A281 runs south through Shalford towards the Tillingbourne villages, and the A246 takes the Clandons. Between them the lanes are narrow, chalky and wet underfoot in winter. Chilworth and Blackheath in particular have long unlit stretches where stopping in the right place matters more than stopping quickly.
Where we work in GU4
The district takes in Blackheath, Burpham (Guildford), Chilworth, Clandon Park, East Clandon, Hatchlands Park, Jacobs Well, Newlands Corner, Shalford, Sutton Green and West Clandon.
Clandon Park and Hatchlands Park both sit off the A246 with their own approach roads, and both are easy for us to work in once we are through the gate.
Questions we get asked about GU4
- My tyre went flat climbing to Newlands Corner.
- Stop as soon as you safely can rather than pressing on to the car park. Driving a hot, underinflated tyre up a long gradient wrecks the internal structure, and a tyre that could have been repaired at the bottom of the hill is usually scrap at the top.
- Do you work in the Tillingbourne villages at night?
- We work around the clock, and Chilworth, Shalford and Blackheath are on our regular run. The lanes there are unlit, so tell us which direction you were travelling and give us a pin. We carry our own lighting for the work itself.
- Can you get to a house on a private drive?
- Normally yes. Long gravel drives are fine if there is somewhere firm and level to stand the car. If the drive is soft or steeply cambered, we may ask to work at the top of it or on the road, which is safer for everyone.
