Mobile tyre fitting and recovery in GU5 (Shere and the Surrey Hills)
Peaslake and the woods above it draw riders and walkers all year round, and the car parking that comes with them is on forest tracks and verges rather than tarmac. Thorn and flint punctures are the everyday work in GU5, and a fair few of them are found hours after the damage was done.
Lower down, Bramley, Wonersh and Shamley Green are village streets with high kerbs and blind bends — different ground, same result on a rim.
The A25 through Gomshall and the lanes to Peaslake
The A25 runs along the north of the district through Gomshall and past the turning for Shere, with a level crossing and a narrow bridge to complicate matters. It moves faster than it looks and there is little verge.
South of it the ground rises steeply into the Hurtwood, and the lanes to Peaslake and Farley Green are single-track with high banks. They are among the hardest addresses in our whole working ground to find at night. The A281 through Bramley is the exception — straight, wide enough to work beside, and easy to direct us to.

If you are on a forest track rather than a road, tell us plainly — we will need to know whether a van can get down it before we set off.
Questions we get asked about GU5
- Can you get a van down a forest track to me?
- Sometimes, and sometimes not. Width, mud and overhanging branches all decide it. Describe the track honestly on the phone and we will tell you whether we can get in or whether it is better to meet at the nearest hard road.
- I picked up a thorn and the tyre went down slowly.
- That is the standard GU5 puncture. If the tyre has not been run flat and the object is in the central tread, it can usually be repaired properly from the inside. We will not plug it from the outside and call it done, because that is not a permanent repair.
- Do you cover the villages south of the A25?
- Yes, all of them on our list for this district. They are further from base than Guildford, so we will be straight with you about timing when you call rather than giving you a figure we cannot keep to.
