Ashtead is a single village district and it behaves like one. The Street carries the shops and the parking pressure, Barnett Wood Lane and Craddocks Avenue take the through traffic, and the station splits the district neatly in two.

The A24 along the edge of the district
The A24 runs along the eastern side of Ashtead as a fast dual carriageway. It has proper verges in places, which makes it safer to stop on than most roads in this part of Surrey, but it is still a road where we would rather work behind a barrier than beside a moving lane.
Inside the village the constraint is parking rather than speed. The Street and the side roads off it are lined with cars for most of the day, and Ashtead Park's roads are wide but often have cars on both sides. Ten feet of clear space beside the wheel is all we need, and finding it is sometimes the slowest part of the job.

- Usually yes, but it depends on the gap. We need clear space at the wheel and somewhere legal to put the van without blocking the road. If it is genuinely too tight, moving the car to a side road fifty yards away solves it.
